Charles Nelson enlisted in the 13th New York Infantry, a two year regiment, participating in all major and minor engagements from Bull Run to Burnside's Mud March. Mustered out with his regiment while the army marched to Chancellorsville, he enlisted as sergeant in the 22nd New York Cavalry six months later. His new regiment arrived in time to participate in the Wilderness Battle with disastrous results. Wounded during the Wilson-Kautz Raid, Charles followed his regiment to the Shenandoah Valley where he served in Custer's Third Division.
If you have ever held a Civil War carbine in your hands and thought, "If only this could talk", then I have a story for you. Sit back, relax and let me tell you about Sgt. Charles Nelson and show you the Sharps carbine he carried while serving in General George Custer's Third Cavalry Division.

Abraham Lincoln Camp # 6, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War located in Rochester, NY has ordered a new government issue headstone for Nelson. This will replace the repaired and illegible government issue headstone now present. Old headstone photos may be seen at Post War top and bottom of page. With any type of luck, the new headstone will arrive and be mounted by 07/07/2008, the 121st anniversary of Nelson's passing. Thank-you Camp # 6!!
Funds are needed to pay cemetery fees associated with removal of the old stone and mounting Nelson's new headstone. Can you spare $5 to have a new headstone installed for Charles? Any amount of donation of course, is welcomed and appreciated. Upon payment of fees, any and all remaining surplus funds will be gifted to Abraham Lincoln Camp # 6, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Friends of Mt. Hope Cemetery. If you wish to contribute by check or money order, email me at: info at talkingrelics dot com for mailing address. Photos of the new stone and amounts gifted will appear on this page shortly after a visit to Charles Nelson's grave in mid-July. Should you donate, I will include your name, hometown and state, listing you as a contributor to this worthy cause unless you wish to remain anonymous. Thank you for your support.

This web site when titled "Sharps Carbine Issued to Pvt. Charles Nelson" was graciously featured and spotlighted by The American Civil War web site.
Email me with your questions or comments at info at talkingrelics dot com. Please be advised, I will no longer answer emails requesting the research of your Sharps. The lack of civility to acknowledge my time and effort with a simple thank you has soured me on the experience. There is enough information within these pages to perform your own research. "Civil War Sharps Carbines & Rifles" by Coates & McAulay listed left is where I found Nelson's carbine listed. Thank you for your understanding and good luck!
