Books
"The Burning: Sheridan's Devastation of the Shenandoah Valley" by John L. Heatwole. This is without a doubt the best Civil War book I have bought in some time. Mr. Heatwole has scoured the Valley for letters, diaries, oral histories and family archives to tell this story of destruction with amazing detail. Read this book and you will understand why Shenandoah Valley residents still say "Barn Burners" in the tone of voice they do to this day. According to the author's research, Charles Nelson's regiment with the Second Brigade, Third Division participated in the burning of barns, mills and other property in and around Staunton and then acted as Rear Guard for Custer's Third Division while the First Brigade wrecked havoc north from Harrisonburg to Cedar Creek. It seems that Rosser's Cavalry, fighting within sight of their burning homes and farms, gave Nelson and the Second Brigade as much trouble as they could handle and then some.
Destroy the Junction: Wilson-Kautz Raid Battle for the Staunton River Bridge by Captain Greg Eanes, USAFR
"Destroy The Junction" is a wonderful 222 page book. A worthy addition it is to "The Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders Series" of books published by H.E. Howard, Inc of Lynchburg, VA. A study of minutia and passion, this body of work belongs on the reference shelf of every cavalry student of the civil war. Captain Eanes begins with General U.S. Grant's conception of destroying the railroads south of Richmond and Petersburg. He explains why this risk is crucial and how it may shorten the war. The reader is then taken on a grueling 500 mile ten day journey through enemy territory with General W.H.F. (Rooney) Lee's Rebel Cavalry Division following and engaging the Union troopers from day one. Eanes explains in detail each of the combat engagements to the delight of any tactician, explores how the citizenry of the region came together to repel the raiders and utilizes many first person accounts from slaves, citizens and soldiers from both sides. He concludes with not only the expected synopsis of the raid and participants but with an interesting Appendix titled "A Case Study In Warfighting". Truly an enjoyable, informative, make you feel like you were there type of book.
