Records of the Army Adjutant General's office show that Sharps carbine serial number C,7999 was used in Co. C, 22nd New York Volunteer Cavalry, during the Civil War. The records of that company show that C,7999 was issued to Sgt. Charles Nelson. Information was found in the Company Regimental books of the 22nd New York Volunteer Cavalry, located in the National Archives under Record Group 94, Entry 112. Serial number research information provided by Springfield Research Service.
Charles answered his country's call to arms twice and was wounded once. He participated in twelve battles, five engagements, nineteen actions and twenty-one skirmishes in his three years and ten months of volunteer service to his Country. According to Muster Rolls for both regiments, Charles was present for duty every month he served. I am in awe of Charles Nelson.
